Monday Hall of Fame Open Recap

The Hall of Fame Open continued on Monday with a jam-packed day of tennis featuring over a dozen matches at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The day marked the continuation of qualifying and start of the main draw highlighted by six three-set matches, a testament to the tight competition across the player field. 

Prior to matchplay on Center Court, the ITHF celebrated Women in Sports Day with a ceremonial coin toss featuring members from the Boston Renegades, Boston Legacy FC, Boston Fleet and Boston Guard. 

After weather delays pushed back the first set of matches, No. 5 seed Eliot Spizzirri claimed the first win on Center Court with a 7-5, 6-2 contest over Evan Zhu. In his second appearance at Newport, the Connecticut native garnered 73% points off his first serve to advance to a consecutive Round of 16 appearance.

Soon after on Center Court the No. 5 in the women’s draw, Destanee Aiava garnered a 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory against Emina Bektas. The three-set thriller featured a career-high 14 aces from Aiava. Also on Center Court, Yuriko Miyazaki completed a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 upset against wild card Christina McHale. 

Meanwhile on Courts No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3, six Americans in Tristan McCormick, Quinn Vandecasteele, Trey Hilderbrand, Mitchell Krueger, Aidan Mayo and Alafia Ayeni won their respective matches to advance into the next round. 

Notably on the women’s side, No. 3 seed Talia Gibson claimed a 6-4, 6-3 win over Qualifier Petra Hule in addition to Sahaja Yamalapalli besting Katherine Sebov 6-2, 6-2.

Patrick Maloney was the last player to advance on Day 2, defeating No. 2 seed James Duckworth 6-2, 7-6 (7) in his first ATP-level grass court match on Center Court. Play was halted on the remaining four singles matches due to darkness and will be continued Tuesday morning.

In doubles action, wild card Genie Bouchard and Olivia Lincer picked up a triumphant 7-5, 7-6 (2) win against Maria Mateas and Alana Smith on Court No. 6. The victory marked Bouchard’s first match on the WTA tour since August 2024, and Lincer’s first career WTA doubles match. 

The duo of Arianne Hartono and Prarthana Thombare defeated Leonie Krug and Elizabeth Mandlik 6-3, 6-4 to kickstart the day, while Haley Giavara and Alexandra Osborne claimed a 6-3, 6-4 match over Catherine Harrison and Christina Rosca to conclude doubles play.

Day three of the 2025 Hall of Fame Open begins today with the completion of Monday’s matches and Round of 32 with play beginning at 11 a.m. Matches kick off with daughter of Hall of Famer Hana Mandlikova, Elizabeth Mandlik on Center Court 2 and the return of 12-time Newport competitor and 2023 champion Adrian Mannarino.

Prior to match play, arena host Blair Henley will conduct a Chat with Champions at 10:30 a.m. Chat with Champions takes place each day in the Ryl Iced Tea Fan Zone.
