Wednesday Hall of Fame Open Recap

Day four of the Hall of Fame Open took to the grass on Wednesday with various matches across six courts at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Doubles play comprised the majority of the action, prior to inclement weather suspending the remainder of matches around 5 p.m.

The Hall of Fame Open recognized TeamFAME Day with several activities across the grounds and culminated in the program’s annual Sunset Slam, celebrating the graduating class of eighth graders a part of the ITHF’s National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) Chapter.

No. 1 seed Tatjana Maria continued her dominant run at Newport defeating Yuriko Miyazaki 6-1, 7-5 on Center Court. The World No. 45 and 2022 Wimbledon Semifinalist claimed 71% of total service points and 77% of first serve points across the match lasting just over 90 minutes. Maria builds off of a Queen’s Club Championship title last month after besting World No. 12 Amanda Anisimova.

“I really like the grass here in Newport. It was not easy for me after Wimbledon because I had a tough loss there, but I had to regroup and I’m happy I get to have another week on grass and am thrilled about my two wins here so far, very grateful,” said Maria.

She will take on Sayaka Ishii in the Quarterfinals on Friday.

On the men’s side of the draw, No. 5 seed Eliot Spizzirri advanced to his first Hall of Fame Open Quarterfinal. The New England native bested Aidan Mayo 6-4, 6-4 on Center Court in dominant fashion, claiming 88% of first serve points and recording eight aces in the match. Spizzirri enters Newport after a string of runs in Challenger Tour matches, notably reaching two finals in Cleveland and San Diego this year.

“Yeah I’m loving it here [Newport], this is one of my favorite tournaments of the year, it’s like a home tournament cause I am just two and a half hours away from home, get to be with family, friends, coaches. It’s an absolute blast,” said Spizziri.

In singles action, No. 3 seed Talia Gibson, qualifier Oscar Weightman, lucky loser James Watt and Ishii all won their respective matches.

Of the 12 doubles matches set to play, the day was highlighted by victories from No. 4 seed Carmen Corley and Ivana Corley as well as the pair of Anirudh Chandrasekar and Reese Stadler. The Corley sisters claimed a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Mary Lewis and Brandy Walker on Court 3, while Chandrasekar and Stadler won 6-2, 6-2 match over 2025 Hall of Fame Open Round of 16 singles opponents Brandon Holt and Zachary Svajda.

The remaining matches were suspended due to inclement weather and will continue Wednesday.

Day five of the 2025 Hall of Fame Open begins today with the completion of Wednesday’s early round matches and start of Round of 16, including singles matches with 2023 Hall of Fame Open champion Adrian Mannarino and former World No. 54 Caty McNally beginning at 11 a.m. on Center Court. Prior to match play, arena host Blair Henley will conduct a Chat with Champions at 10:30 a.m. Chat with Champions takes place each day on the Ryl Iced Tea Lawn.
